RIDE UPDATE
HEAT ADVISORY: The most recent July 4 afternoon forecast for Macclenny, FL is 99F with real feel 113F (real feel shade 104F) with SSW 7-15 mph headwind at the end of the century ride route. Pre-hydrate on Monday. Hydrate during the ride. Moderate your pace. Go inside an air-conditioned store if overheating. Do not let anyone ride alone.
55-Mile Ride Is On
We start at 7 am, so the 55 milers will be finished riding before noon.
30-mile ride is On
It starts at 8:30 and will be along the mostly shaded trail.
Century Canceled
However, the Century riders would finish after noon. There are very few sources of water or shade along the Century route. We do not have any SAG support. Thus, the July 4 century ride is canceled.
Every year the NFBC does 30, 55 & 100-mile rides on New Year’s Day in January and for Independence Day in July. The 100-mile route takes you along some of the least traveled roads in the area and includes a section in the southernmost part of Georgia. The shorter options take you out to Mcclenny (55) or just up the rail trail and back (30).

55-MILE ROUTE
Although New Year and Independence Day rides follow the same 30, 55, and 100-mile routes, they are very different. Temperatures for the January ride are often in the 40s with strong northeast winds. The landscapes tend to be brown and grey. On the other hand, the temperatures in July are usually in the 90s and occasionally over 100. The winds are out of the southwest. The forest and fields are now bright green and lush.
If you generally ride only in the mornings during the summer, be warned that the 100-mile route will expose you to the hottest midday temperatures. Your body may not be acclimated to riding in extremely high temperatures. We recommend that you do some easy rides from 11 am to 3 pm in the weeks before the ride to get acclimated.
Group 1 will be all 100-mile riders and all 55-mile riders. Group 1 will depart at 7 AM to avoid the heat. Sunrise is at 6:30 AM. The Ride Leader for the 100-mile route is Jonathan Tomassetti. It may be extremely hot, so this may not be the best choice for your first century of 2022. If you start on the 100-mile ride and decide mid-route that you are not up to it, you can change to the 55-mile route from Rest Stop #2 in MacClenny. Please download and look at the map before the ride.
Group 2 will be any level cyclist riding the 30-mile JBRT. Group 2 will depart at 8:30 AM. (This is actually the same as the weekly Westside Rail Trail Ride that is held every M-W-F. If you normally work on weekdays, this is a chance to try this popular ride.
