The Dames Point Bridge Ride is CANCELLED!

Bummer!!! I was wondering why nobody came out to see my historic t-shirt. I was a little suspicious when It said, "first ever Dames Point Bridge Ride".

Many many years ago, in a non-NFBC ride, we did a couple early Sunday morning rides known as the “Outlaw Ride” over the Dames Point Bridge. The descent has left a lasting scared as s…..image on my brain. It was illegal then and suspect it still is! Doubt few readers on this string are old enough to remember it.

Cycling News is reporting that Marianne Vos has won yet another race, beating competition riding up and over the Dames Point Bridge, escorted by Jacksonville Sheriff’s deputies!  What a champion.

Marianne’s fan (one of many),
Gus

Please make sure that Tadej Podgacar knows so that he can hop on a plane back to Europe - what a bummer he won’t get to lead this ride.

After extensive negotiations with the Florida Department of Transportation, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, and a very angry flock of seagulls, I regret to inform you that our totally legitimate plan to ride on I-295/Dames Point has been denied.

It turns out that:

1. Highway traffic laws still apply to cyclists. Who knew?

2. The wind speeds on the Dames Point Bridge exceed recommended aero bar usage limits.

3. A team of engineers determined that 30+ cyclists attempting a paceline on a six-lane interstate would cause ‘minor disruptions’—such as total traffic collapse.

4. Club insurance manager Brian Benwick stopped returning my calls.

So, unfortunately, I must cancel this ride. I deeply appreciate the enthusiasm of those who already started planning their KOM attempts and drafting their obituaries.

Stay tuned for our much safer rides, which will take place on actual routes meant for bicycles.

Happy April Fools’ Day!
